Natagiri Pass is said to have been named for "natagiri" hats, worn by people who worked in the mountains. The poet Matsuo Basho describes this pass as the most perilous section of his "Oku no Hosomichi" journey to the Deep North. Today the route is maintained as a historic path where visitors can tread in the footsteps of Matsuo Basho.
