Infromation

The former residence of the Ariji Family was also used as the house of the "Hojin", or protector of the border. The thatched-roofed, spacious building is known as the first house where the poet, Matsuo Basho stayed on his "Oku no Hosomichi" journey to the Deep North. Near the JR Rikuto Line Sakaida Station is the "Sakaida Watershed", where the river splits toward the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan. Flat land watersheds such as this are extremely rare in Japan.
